Beaches: Sun, Sand, and Surf

For most of us, the mere mention of summer provokes an immediate desire to head for the beach. The combination of sun, sand, and sea is the reason why so many people love the beach. Long walks, water sports, and sun bathing are regular activities at the beach.

There are many types of beaches. Salt water and fresh water beaches exit in many parts of the world. The most commonly associated to the word “beach” are those at seashores.

Beaches are formed where water and wind become waves or currents depositing sediments onto an area. The area comes together from the loose rock particles deposited by the current. From this continuous process, a beach emerges.

The beach sand ranges in color from charcoal gray to fine white. Depending on the type of sediments deposited, the color and texture of beach sands differ. Some beaches have powder fine sand, while others have rougher particles.

The plant and animal life around the beach can differ from one place to another. Some beaches are wide stretches of sand without any plant life. Others have grass growing in patches. Palm trees are common in tropical beaches.
